So you want to start a business on the internet, and you have a computer and a strong desire to make money, what next?
You’re most likely asking yourself; What should I sell on the internet?
The first thing is to find a group of people who share a need, then come up with a product or service that will satisfy that need. Most people are surfing the internet for solutions to their problems. So once you identify people with a common problem, you can start to think of what kind of product or service you might offer as a solution to that problem.
How do you find a market with a common problem?
Let your passions lead you.
Look for people you have something in common with. People who share an interest with you. You’ll enjoy your business far much more if it’s based on something you’re passionate about. If it’s information you picked up on a job, skills you developed as part of a hobby, knowledge from a previous business or something that is a big part of your life; that is expertise you can build on for a successful business.
Just ask yourself;
- What is my favorite way to spend time?
- What topic do I have a lot of knowledge about?
- What would I enjoy learning about?
- What do people ask my advice about?
Once you’ve written a list with your answers, shorten them to four or five topics you’d like to explore further. Those topics will then be your starting point for your research.
Look for a problem to solve
The key to a successful website business is finding a group of people who share a common problem, then coming up with a product or service idea that will solve their problem. These narrowly defined groups of people are referred to as niche markets. Learn more on how to identify a niche market here.
Product types
Now, after you’ve identified a hot market, you need to look at how you’re going to solve their problem. What are you going to sell to them? Here are the possibilities.
Digital products for download
Most people turn to the internet for answers to questions, so one of the best products you can sell online is instant information: ebooks, tickets, software, music among others. Digital products have huge advantages, no packaging and shipping and all the time and hassle that go with it. You can update and improve them whenever you want. There is unlimited sales potential and the best thing about them is 100% profit! Beyond the money you put in to create them, you basically don’t have to spend another cent.
Services
These days most people turn to the internet before anything else when they want to hire a service. So if your business is a service you need a website. Without paying a fortune you can create a website that will put you right in front of your potential clients when they’re searching the internet for the service you provide. And you can sell your service as well as other products your target market find useful.
Affiliate products
Did you know that you can get a commission just for recommending other peoples products on your website? It’s called affiliate marketing and it works very well if you want to set up a site that provides a lot of information. Now with all the information you offer, your visitors trust your judgment, so they’ll click on your affiliate links and buy products you recommend.
Paid subscriptions and memberships
Getting people to pay for access to your content or be a member of your forum takes sometime. You need to build up a lot of value and do a lot of research to make sure that people will pay for it. For example,
- Information that changes all the time like a directory, stock market news.
- Information that’s collected from a lot of different sources
- Exclusive information that’s impossible to find anywhere else.
- A site that matches up people that have something to offer with people that need it.
Physical products
If your market is crying out for a particular product, then you can sell a product that already exists or develop your own product. The main advantage is you have ultimate control on how much profit you make on every sale and you have the potential for the biggest profit margin. But you’ll have to contend with much higher costs, increased legal obligations and a long development cycle.
Selling other peoples products it the popular way to go since there is a lot less work and no product development costs. You need to consider though that you cannot control production costs and quality. You may need to consider worries like the other company backing out of the agreement or ceasing to manufacture the product you’re selling.
